Assistant Minister Position

Assistant Minister - King’s Chapel, Boston, Massachusetts

King’s Chapel, in downtown Boston, is seeking a new Assistant Minister. The Assistant Minister will report to the Senior Minister and assist her in a manner that reflects their comparative skills and interests. We are looking for a person with particular experience and strength in Children and Family Ministry, and a desire to engage with our proposed Memorial Project honoring enslaved persons affiliated with our church. Other areas of experience or interest might include: adult religious education, preaching, pastoral care, Christian worship leadership, social justice, church growth, and communications.

King’s Chapel is at an exciting moment in its 300 year history! The church has created hybrid worship and small group opportunities, embarked on a congregational initiative for environmental justice, and initiated a memorial with the assistance of MASS Design, in addition to its ongoing programs. The Senior Minister seeks a ministerial colleague with whom she, other staff, and congregational leadership can continue to build a thriving church in the heart of our city.

Located on the historic Freedom Trail, King’s Chapel is a liberal Christian Church affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association and welcoming to all. The position of Assistant Minister is open to liberal Christians who are ordained or eligible to be ordained, in the UUA and other traditions.

The Assistant Minister will be asked to regularly lead the Christian sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism; perform weddings and funerals; participate in our two Sunday worship services; and preach once a month at the services. The Assistant Minister will also provide the primary leadership in developing our children’s programming and collaborate with the Senior Minister to offer adult religious education programs, including a monthly gathering of Theology on Tap.

King’s Chapel follows an Anglican pattern of worship at its main Sunday service using the King’s Chapel Book of Common Prayer, the Revised Common Lectionary, and service music led by our organist and professional choir; this service is held in the sanctuary and via live stream. Our Sunday 9 AM intergenerational service, which is highly participatory, is held in our Parish House Chapel and via zoom. Coffee hours frequently follow each service.

The King’s Chapel paid staff includes a full-time Music Director and Organist; a Parish Administrator; a Director for our Freedom Trail visitor programs; and an administrative worship coordinator in addition to the ministers. Part-time staff include: a pianist, an administrative assistant, and a sexton. Congregational in governance, there is also an active and talented elected lay leadership.

Pursuant to the UUA tradition, the Assistant will be a contract employee, renewable annually. The expectation is that the Assistant is in a position to make a multi-year commitment.

Compensation will be dependent upon experience and include a cash salary with benefits and housing in the form of a newly renovated apartment located on the 5th floor of our historic Beacon Hill Parish House, accessible by elevator, overlooking the Boston Common

To apply, send letter of interest with resume to jobs@kings-chapel.org. Applications will be reviewed as received. We hope to have the position filled by May.
