Director of Public History Program

King’s Chapel Director of Public History Program
 
King’s Chapel, founded in 1686, is a National Historic Landmark on Boston’s Freedom Trail and an active Christian Unitarian house of worship. The church’s Public History Program is open year round to visitors from across the country and around the world for guided tours and exhibits exploring three centuries of social and religious history in Boston. During the summer tourist season, King's Chapel hosts thousands of visitors each day. Almost 300,000 individuals visit the site annually. In a new and on-going initiative, King’s Chapel hopes to develop a physical memorial as soon as 2023 to persons enslaved by the church’s ministers or members in the 17th and 18th centuries. This project is based in large part on research conducted by church history staff.
 
The Director is responsible for the development, management, and evaluation of all history program offering serving both internal and external audiences at King’s Chapel, and reports to the Parish Administrator with dotted line responsibilities to the Senior Minister, and serves as a member of the church’s senior staff.
 
Essential Job Duties include:

●      Coordinating programming and exhibition schedules to ensure high-quality offerings and interdepartmental coordination.
 
●      Overseeing the visitor experience and creating protocols to ensure visitor, staff and property safety.
 
●      Proposing and managing operational budget for the program in alignment with the church’s fiscal needs and requirements.
 
●      Hiring educator staff for the program (3-12 persons depending on the time of the year), scheduling staff for tour visits, managing staff training, and conducting annual staff evaluations.
 
●      Identifying, cultivating, and managing partnerships with area/regional educational, cultural, governmental, and non-profit institutions to develop mutually beneficial program opportunities.
 
●      Coordinating programming and exhibition schedules to ensure high-quality offerings and interdepartmental coordination and overseeing visitor experience.
●      Developing and implementing new and improved visitor programming
 
●      Representing the program to the public and acting as a spokesperson when needed, and reporting on the Program to church leadership
 
●      Managing ticketing platform and vendor relationship, overseeing ticketing revenue accounting and reconciliation of cash receipts
 
●      Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience: 4-year college degree; Master’s Degree in education, museum studies, or related field. Supervisory experience required.
 
Qualifications: Superior professional oral and written communication skills required. Experience in program and curriculum development. Museum experience required, with a willingness to identify and create ongoing learning opportunities to ensure programmatic currency and vibrancy. Ability to motivate and direct staff in support of the Program’s goals and initiatives. Experience in institutional visitor services. Excellent customer service skills. Record of innovation. A strong commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in the field. Strong interest or education in American history valuable. Familiarity with website development, social media and innovative technology helpful.
 
Salary: $50,000 -$60,000
