Today, the present building of King’s Chapel is over 250 years old, and, like most buildings (and people!), she is starting to show her age. In conjunction with the National Historic Landmarks Commission, King’s Chapel is undergoing a long and involved restoration project. As a part of this venture, we have been working on repairing and restoring various elements of the building.
Over the last few years, we have been fortunate enough to complete ceiling repairs and repainting, both on the blue center panel (painted blue to reflect not only the sky, but to echo the blue of the slate tiles covering the floor) and the white vaults over the galleries.
We have also recently reupholstered the cushions in the pews. While these cushions have been recovered several times since the church was built, the padding underneath the fabric has remained the same - made of horsehair. We’ve also reinforced
the sounding board over the pulpit. Recently, we sealed and painted the exterior columns. Future projects include repairs to the roof and further work on the exterior wood columns, which have been damaged by rain, snow and other New England weather over the years.
If you would like to make a donation to help fund our continuing restoration project, please send a check, with "restoration project" in the memo line, to King's Chapel Parish House, 64 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108.
