Job Description

Position Purpose
The Building & Grounds Steward ensures the care, safety, and smooth operation of King’s Chapel and the Parish House. This role combines hands-on maintenance with vendor coordination and facilities planning to preserve the integrity of our historic buildings and provide a welcoming, safe environment for staff, members, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities
​
Facilities Management
  • Oversee and coordinate maintenance of all church buildings, grounds, and property.
  • Manage an annual preventive maintenance schedule for major systems (heating, cooling, fire and safety, elevator, etc.).
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for vendors, contractors, and inspectors.
  • Coordinate with the Buildings & Grounds Committee, Trustees, Vestry, and Ministers on building projects and insurance matters.
  • Monitor vendor performance and ensure service contracts (HVAC, fire/alarm systems, refuse/recycling, landscaping, etc.) meet standards.
  • Implement and maintain safety protocols across all facilities.
  • Support space use management, ensuring facilities are clean, safe, and ready for events or services.
Custodial & Groundskeeping
  • Perform regular custodial work at both the Chapel and Parish House: dusting, vacuuming, mopping, polishing fixtures, window and surface cleaning, and trash/recycling removal.
  • Maintain outdoor areas, including sweeping walkways, mowing, weeding, minor brick/stone repairs, and snow removal.
  • Track custodial supplies and notify Parish Administrator when reordering is needed.
Additional Duties
  • Respond to urgent building or grounds issues as needed.
    Collaborate with staff, vendors, and volunteers to ensure smooth facility operations.
    Support special projects or other duties as assigned.
    Oversee contractors, manage occasional custodial help
Qualifications
  • Proven experience with building maintenance and systems in older or historic properties.
  • Familiarity with facility safety standards and compliance requirements.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills; ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Flexibility, problem-solving mindset, and commitment to maintaining the property. 
  • Physical ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs, climb tall ladders, and handle cleaning chemicals safely.

Sunday Services Steward

We are currently seeking a dedicated and dependable Sunday Service Steward to assist with the preparation and smooth running of our Sunday worship services. The Sunday Service Steward plays an important behind-the-scenes and visible role in our liturgy, ensuring that the sanctuary is ready for worship and that services proceed with reverence and order. Responsibilities include:
  • Preparing the sanctuary before each service (lighting candles, setting up books, arranging vessels, etc.)
  • Assisting clergy and lay leaders before and after worship
  • Re-directing tourists who may want to visit the church during worship
  • Ensuring the church is tidy and properly closed following services
  • Occasionally assisting at weddings, funerals, and special services

​Ideal candidate:
  • Punctual, organized, and attentive to detail
  • Respectful of the liturgical traditions and sacred space of King’s Chapel
  • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively
  • Physically able to move and lift light objects as part of setup
  • Prior church or hospitality experience a plus, but not required

Hours & Compensation:

This is a part-time position, typically requiring four hours on Sunday mornings, with additional hours for special services as needed. Compensation is $30/hour
