Rev. Sam Holland comes to Boston most recently from Plymouth, New Hampshire, where they served as Pastor & Teacher of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ. While there (2020 - 2023), they were proud to welcome over 15 new members, to lead the church in setting up a little free food pantry, and to organize a regional confirmation program. Sam is passionate about church programming for all ages, but has extensive experience with leading youth and children in faith development as well as athletics. Prior to NH, Sam served at Hingham Congregational Church, United Church of Christ for over five years.
Sam is originally from Asheville, North Carolina. Prior to being ordained in the United Church of Christ, they attended Boston University’s School of Theology, and focused on Global and Community Engagement. While in seminary, Sam completed clinical pastoral education at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (trauma 1) and was engaged in many forms of LGBTQ+ advocacy. During their undergraduate studies at UNC Asheville, Sam majored in Art History and minored in Business Marketing while playing NCAA division one soccer. Since playing competitive soccer, Sam has coached soccer coast to coast, ages 2 - 18. Between their time at UNC Asheville and Boston University, Sam completed one year of service in AmeriCorps and ensured zipliners didn’t collide with gorgeous oaks while working as a canopy/zipline guide outside of Asheville.
Sam is passionate about justice, prayer, Christian community, making jokes, being silly, and backpacking. They proudly participate in the United Church of Christ’s Next Generation Leadership Initiative, where they learn about supporting and fortifying congregations that can be the churches of the future. Sam aims to provide dynamic and transformative leadership.
Sam’s partner and wife, Libby, is a social worker, knitter, and proud co-guardian of the lovely dilute tortoiseshell cat Lucille (named after Lucille Ball) and the handsome tuxedo cat, Benjamin. Sam hopes to see you at King's Chapel sometime soon or to catch you in a zoom at some point!
